Who's in Control: You or Your Flesh?

Emotions are fickle, but we must find a way to control them. (David Garrison/Pexels.com)
Feelings are fickle. One day they can be up, one day they can be down, and other days I can't find them at all!

Now, God gave us feelings, and it's not wrong to have them—they are an important part of enjoying life. So, we don't need to deny that we have them, but we do need to prevent them from controlling us.

The apostle Paul talks about this issue in 1 Corinthians 3:3 (AMPC), which says, "For you are still [unspiritual, having the nature] of the flesh [under the control of ordinary impulses]."

What is the "flesh"? The flesh is our desires—what we want, think and feel—that don't line up with God's heart. Paul goes on to say in Romans 8:8 that "those who are in the flesh [living a life that caters to sinful appetites and impulses] cannot please God."

The Bible is saying that our emotions—what we feel like doing—can so often hinder us from doing what God wants us to do. And the Lord wants to help us grow to the point where we are no longer controlled by our emotions so we won't miss out on His good plan for our lives.

You may be thinking, Joyce, I'm just an emotional person—I really can't help it.

While it's true that some people are more emotional than others, we can't let this be an excuse to just do whatever we want all the time or wait to feel like doing something to do it.

With God's help, every single one of us can learn how to manage our emotions and make wise choices. read more
